MOGON Courses
Hands-on Training
We offer various courses that you can register for via the university’s Ilias e-learning system, particularly for newcomers. If you do not have a university account, please write to to register or ask for more information.
All courses, unless otherwise noted, will take place within the rooms of the ZDV. You will find us here .
Course Schedule/Frequency
Any course date is set, when demand is expressed – either as a waiting list or directly – we will try to accommodate needs and may offer additional dates for the course or workshop in question if necessary.
Our introductory course series is set to take place about every three months.
Integrating MOGON into Your Classroom
You face the challenge of providing your students with hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies? The HPC Team is committed to support your effort by offering a unique resource: our MOGON clusters. By integrating our HPC cluster into your course offerings, you can create immersive learning experiences that simulate real-world challenges and applications. If you plan to use MOGON as part of your student teaching program, there are a few things we want you to keep in mind.
Early Engagement: The Key to Success
For educators planning to use our MOGON clusters, early engagement with the HPC team is crucial.
- For new courses, please contact us at least one month in advance. This allows ample time for setup, optimization and troubleshooting, making sure that everything runs smoothly.
- For established courses with previous experience, a lead time of two week is usually sufficient.
The HPC team is always interested in the content of such a course, as it allows us to gain insight into the background of students who have completed the course.
Your Personal Course Project
Although we hope your course to be reoccurring, we create a dedicated course project even for one-time events. This approach offers several advantages:
- It is possible to create a new Slurm association that is dedicated and limited to a particular course.
- A dedicated course project safeguards the shares and quotas of any existing research projects.
- This separation guarantees the security of sensitive research data, preventing inadvertent access by students.
- Easier incorporation of specific node setups e.g. special Nvidia GPU capabilities.
Resource Requirements
Courses conducted on MOGON must have reasonable and well defined resource requirements. If you are struggling to specify your requirements don’t hesitate to contact us. We can assist you in figuring out what you need.
To give you a basic idea:
- Two GPU-nodes in the context of a one week block internship (reasonable)
- 3-5 students each with one CPU-node for one week (reasonable)
- The entire A100dl partition in MOGON NHR for three months (not reasonable)
Reservations
Overloaded systems can cause significant delays, thereby disrupting the course flow. To avoid this, the HPC Team creates reservations on the clusters. This proactive measure helps to maintain system performance and ensures availability during high-demand periods. By creating reservations we can guarantee your requested compute nodes to be available, pre-configured and ready to go, just in time for your course.
Application Installation and Script Feedback
The HPC team can assist with the installation of specific applications required for your course. Additionally, we can provide valuable feedback on scripts to optimize performance and avoid common errors.
Testing Workflows
It is essential to test course workflows in advance. Single-user workflows may appear flawless but can cause issues when executed concurrently by many users. Testing helps to identify potential problems, such as crashing cluster components e.g. a file system, which could lead to (temporary) account revocation and severe disruption of the course.
