Optimizing Our Login Nodes for a Better User Experience!
As part of our ongoing efforts to provide a high-quality computing experience for all our customers, we’re introducing some important changes to how we manage our login nodes. Specifically, we want to explain why we can no longer allow Visual Studio Code (VSCode) on these systems.
At MOGON, we’re dedicated to ensuring that every interaction with our systems is fast, reliable, and efficient. Our login nodes are a critical part of this experience, and we need to ensure they remain responsive and available for everyone.
VSCode is a powerful tool, but it can be resource-intensive and impact the performance of our login nodes. To prevent this, we’ve implemented new guidelines to minimize the load on these systems. Unfortunately, this means that VSCode cannot be used on our MOGON NHR login nodes moving forward.
To ensure compliance with these guidelines, we’ve also set up a cronjob that will automatically terminate any VSCode processes running on the MOGON NRHR login nodes every 2 minutes. This is necessary to prevent resource overload and maintain system stability.
We understand that many of you rely on code editors like VSCode for your daily work. That’s why we’re excited to offer a seamless alternative: the MOD CodeServer App, fully integrated into our MOGON OnDemand service.
The MOD CodeServer App is a web-based application that provides a robust and feature-rich coding experience, accessible directly from your web browser. With no need for local installations or configurations, you can:
To get started with the CodeServer App, simply navigate to
mod.hpc.uni-mainz.de
in your web browser. From there, you’ll be presented with a list of available applications. Please select the “Code Server
” app from this list to access our feature-rich coding environment.
By introducing these changes, we can ensure a more reliable and efficient experience for all our customers. You’ll benefit from faster login times and improved system availability.
